Tokyo Family
Shukichi e Timiko, una coppia di anziani coniugi che vive in una idilliaca casa in una piccola isola del Mare Interno del Giappone, decidono di fare visita ai loro figli a Tokyo. A dispetto delle loro aspettative, i figli sono però troppo impegnati per dedicare il giusto tempo a mamma e papà: Koichi, il figlio maggiore, medico di famiglia, gestisce una piccola clinica, mentre la sorella Shigeko è alle prese con il suo affollato salone di bellezza e il fratello minore Shuji è un macchinista freelance.

L'estate di Kikujiro
Tokio. È estate e la scuola è finita. Per il piccolo Masao, che vive con la nonna da quando sua madre si è trasferita un una nuova cittadina, si prospetta un periodo di vacanza da passare in solitudine: la nonna deve lavorare e gli amici di scuola sono tutti partiti. Dopo aver trovato una foto di sua mamma con l'indirizzo della nuova residenza, Masao decide di andare a cercarla, ma non può affrontare il viaggio da solo. Ad accompagnarlo nella sua ricerca ci pensa Kikujiro, un amico della nonna, uomo bizzarro, insolente, opportunista e rozzo. I due viaggiano attraverso il Giappone tra imprevisti e incontri bizzarri e l'avventura estiva si rivela per entrambi una importante lezione di vita.

Yasuo then learns that he is the winner of an essay contest and will be offered a scholarship to study in France. Akiko, is now pregnant and Yasuo promises to break with Yuriko.
