Il cane della sposa

Quando legge sul giornale un'inserzione pubblicata dai gangster per riavere il cane, William decide di restituirlo ai legittimi proprietari, dicendo a Kate di averlo smarrito durante una passaggiata. Il malcapitato, però, finirà invischiato nella lotta intestina tra due bande di gangster e, per ben due volte, dovrà provare alla polizia la sua innocenza, fino alla resa dei conti.

Evviva il nostro eroe
Wodroow (Eddie Bracken) è figlio di un eroe della prima guerra mondiale e corre immediatamente ad arruolarsi nei marines per servire il suo paese in guerra nel Pacifico. Viene però scartato per la sua allergia da fieno. Non ha il coraggio di dirlo a sua madre e ai suoi compaesani. Lo aiuta un sergente dei marines, che lo accompagna al paese e testimonia del valore di Woodrow in guerra. Il paese lo accoglie come un eroe a tal punto che il ragazzo è costretto a candidarsi come sindaco. Alla fine, preoccupato dalle conseguenze del uo gesto, decide di raccontare la verità: non è une eroe ma un riformato. Con sua grande sorpresa si accorge che i concittadini non si sentono ingannati. Anzi un vero eroe ha il coraggio di ammettere le proprie panzane in pubblico. Film esilarante mantiene un ritmo incalzante per tutta la sua durata.

Quattordicesimo episodio della saga che vede al centro della narrazione le indagini del mitico Charlie Chan, Il pugnale scomparso è un giallo classico e scontato, basato su uno scheletro narrativo ormai consolidato (il sospettato principale si rivelerà ovviamente innocente) e risolto dalle brillanti deduzioni del detective. Il regista H. Bruce Humberstone inscena il tutto senza particolare brio o sequenze degne di nota, limitandosi a restituire una confezione tanto gradevole quanto anonima. Probabilmente ostacolato dalla longevità della serie, che ormai ha ben poco di nuovo da sviluppare, il film rischia di annoiare lo spettatore, o comunque di non sorprenderlo mai come dovrebbe. Sceneggiatura di Scott Darling e Charles Belden.

Complications arise as a result of the valet's determination to ruin the arrangement, and the equal determination by Elmer and his sweetheart Annie (Louise Fazenda) to see that he doesn't.
