Un distinto funzionario dei servizi segreti inglesi è da anni una "talpa" per il Kgb. Non lo fa per soldi, né per l'ideologia, solo come ringraziamento a una spia russa che gli salvò la famiglia tempo addietro. È così prudente e (per chi non sa l'antefatto) demotivato che non lo scoprono. Un innocente vien preso per la spia e ucciso. In Georgia, Henry Warren vuole assolutamente le terre di suo cugino Rad e del negro Scott. Accusa di possesso illegale Scott e fa in modo che gli sia anche attribuita la colpa di un grave incidente, provocato invece da lui stesso e di cui è vittima suo figlio Colie. È nobile l'assunto ideologico, grossi sono i nomi che troviamo fra gli interpreti, ma la sceneggiatura è pesantemente vincolata a banali luoghi comuni, fino a punte di involontario grottesco. Nemmeno Preminger, che pure è un gran regista, riesce a salvare l'operazione.

Si tratta di un processo difficile: l'imputato è reo confesso, non vi sono testimoni a discarico, l'accusatore pubblico, un avversario politico di Biegler, si fa assistere da un grande avvocato della capitale. Inoltre la vittima era un uomo che contava molte amicizie. Biegler studia il caso in tutti i suoi particolari ed alla luce anche di precedenti giudiziari, viene alla conclusione che effettivamente la gelosia provoca talvolta reazioni sproporzionate.

The soldiers go to the Chor Bazar, where they find a beggar-cum-thief, Yusuf Ustad, and bring him before the noble man. The noble man asks Yusuf to abduct and kill the child, who will be the future king. Greedy Yusuf accepts the offer, but is unable to kill the cherubic child, and ends up abducting him, leaving evidence in blood to show that the child has been killed. The young prince is thus brought on to the streets of this Chor Bazar where he will grow up, and be destined to spend the rest of his life as a thief and beggar.

LaShelle, premio Oscar), scenografia, musica. Alcune scene furono dirette da Mamoulian, poi sostituito dal produttore D.F. Zanuck con Preminger. 3 minuti tagliati poco dopo l'uscita del film sono stati reintrodotti in certe versioni video.

Birodhananda is interested in getting his son Tribhanga married to Rupasi. Bastabesh goes after Rupasi/Kamala who blinds him. Finally the gods perform their miracle and a repentant Bastabesh is restored his sight and kingdom.

Ten years after the end of World War I, Austrian soldier Franz leaves Russia and returns to his village, where he is reunited with Frieda, a woman who believes he is her long-lost son. She seeks him out and greets him with such loving joy, that Franz doesn't have the heart to tell her the truth. He stays with her and when he gets to know his new girlfriend Annie, he begs her to hide his true identity from Annie. Annie, for her part, has seen through this charade already, but chooses to say nothing and to continue to care for Franz.

The comedy "Vendelin's Purgatory and Paradise" contains the amusing experiences of the Zemlicka family from Prague who are all trying to find a good match for their daughter Amalka. Amalka is a pretty girl and it comes as no surprise that Vendelin Hrom grows fond of her, having met her and her whole family on a Sunday outing. On the way home they all get wet and so Vendelin is invited to the Zemlicka's house to dry off; he is given dinner and asked to stay the night. The father and mother think up plans to ensnare the timid Vendelin so that they can marry off their daughter.
